EJ2918 by Beckhoff

The EJ2918 is a safety output plug-in manufactured by Beckhoff for the EJ EtherCAT Plugins series. Mounted on a compact carrier board, the module supplies isolated switching signals that disconnect or activate 24 V actuators under TwinSAFE control. Its direct integration into the EtherCAT I/O topology allows fail-safe logic to be installed next to standard control circuits without requiring additional cabinet space. The plug-in format also supports compact machine control assemblies where conventional terminal modules would occupy too much room.

Each channel is powered by a 24 VDC actuator supply and drives external contactors through high-side transistors configured as digital fail-safe outputs. The module provides 8 independent switching points that meet Safety Category 4 requirements. Its hardware fault tolerance of 1 ensures that a single internal defect cannot compromise the shutdown path. Diagnostic integrity is supported by a coverage metric of 98.1%, while four onboard diagnostic LEDs indicate channel status and errors. The module achieves the PL e performance level, and a periodic proof test is not required. A dedicated error pin reports short circuits and wiring faults to the TwinSAFE logic controller, allowing the control system to respond to detected output problems.

The housing measures 12 mm in width, 55 mm in depth, and 152 mm in height, allowing the plug-in to fit between neighboring signal cards without obstructing airflow or adjacent heat sinks. A front status strip contains eight LEDs that mirror the operating state of the field circuits, while the separate diagnostic indicators report module errors. The module carries the Type B classification, which pairs it with compatible TwinSAFE logic blocks during system configuration. Cable-relief features and board-guidance holes match other EJ form factors, allowing safety and standard I/O components to be installed in alternating positions on the carrier board. This arrangement maintains access to wiring points and visual indicators when multiple plug-ins are mounted close together.
