EJ1918 by Beckhoff

The EJ1918 plug-in module is manufactured by Beckhoff for the EJ EtherCAT Plugins series. It is an I/O module that adds safety-related digital inputs and timing outputs directly to a printed-circuit backplane, allowing machine builders to embed EtherCAT functionality without discrete terminal blocks. In an automation cell, the unit links sensors, emergency-stop chains, and synchronized actuators to the EtherCAT network so that programmable controllers can read safe states and issue clocked signals with minimal wiring overhead. This direct backplane connection also reduces the number of separate field connections required within the control assembly.

The EJ1918 is designed for compact mounting on densely populated carrier boards. Its board edge occupies only 12 mm of lateral space, the housing rises to 152 mm, and its components extend 55 mm above the carrier card, allowing multiple plug-in modules to fit side by side in a control panel. The enclosure has an IP20 protection rating, so the module is intended for installation inside a closed cabinet that protects it from moisture and conductive debris. Field devices connect to input circuitry designed for 24 V DC sensor power, eliminating the need for external voltage-level conversion. The compact profile leaves room for nearby modules while supporting orderly backplane layouts and accessible wiring routes.

The module provides 8 clock outputs that deliver synchronized pulses for stepper drives or valve sequencing. Eight fail-safe inputs monitor external contacts without supplying power to them, supporting the detection of safety-related input states. These sensor channels accept potential-free contacts, allowing straightforward series wiring for relay contacts, emergency-stop buttons, or other dry-contact devices. Internal test routines provide 98.3% diagnostic coverage, enabling the module to detect a high proportion of relevant faults before they affect the control loop. The module also has a 15 g shock rating, allowing it to withstand mechanical shocks associated with transport and operation on modular machinery.
