The CX9010-N031 is a communication module supplied by Beckhoff for the CX Embedded PC Systems series. It expands a controller with a serial channel so automation devices such as drives, barcode readers, or remote I/O stations can exchange data over industrial multidrop wiring. By adding this port, the embedded PC can supervise field components, collect process values, and issue setpoints without requiring a separate gateway. This arrangement supports direct communication between the controller and serial devices in factory automation, building systems, and distributed control applications.

The module provides an RS-422/RS-485 interface, allowing either differential point-to-point communication or half-duplex bus signaling. Physical wiring terminates at a 9-pin D-sub socket, which supports shielded cables and screw-lock fasteners for vibration resistance. The module provides 1 communication channel, so additional serial lines require separate modules. Communication speed reaches 115 kbit/s, which is suitable for parameter transfers and cyclic status messages used by industrial control equipment. The termination resistor is enabled by default, making the unit suitable for installation at the far end of a trunk. Proper termination helps prevent signal reflections that could otherwise corrupt transmitted data frames.

Echo operation is disabled by default, so transmitted characters do not return to the receive buffer. Receive and transmit behavior use the automatic setting, allowing the module to change the driver direction without external control commands. The intended network position is an end point, so the module should not be placed in the middle of a line unless termination is provided elsewhere. Restoring the factory settings returns the port to RS-485 mode, which supports two-wire bus segments commonly used with building controls, energy meters, and distributed valve islands. These default settings reduce the number of manual communication adjustments required when connecting compatible serial devices.
