CX1030-0013 by Beckhoff

The CX1030-0013 is an embedded PC module from Beckhoff. It belongs to the CX Embedded PC Systems series and functions as a compact, PLC-class controller for industrial automation tasks. By combining a PC processor, a real-time operating environment, and fieldbus interfaces in a DIN-rail form factor, it provides deterministic control logic and motion coordination directly on the machine.

The computing section operates at 1.8 GHz using an Intel Pentium M processor, giving the controller the bandwidth needed for multitasking IEC 61131-3 programs and HMI services. Working data are buffered in 256 MB of DDR RAM, while system software and user projects are retained on a 64 MB CompactFlash card that preserves its contents through power cycles. Two onboard Ethernet ports with two RJ45 connectors support soft real-time communication with distributed I/O and supervisory networks. The module omits DVI and USB interfaces, reducing unnecessary panel connections in cabinet-mounted installations and preserving electromagnetic compatibility margins.

Mechanical integration is simplified by a depth of 99 mm, a width of 96 mm, and a height of 112 mm, allowing the PC to fit into shallow control enclosures beside I/O terminals. The enclosure has an IP20 protection rating, so the device is intended for installation inside a protected control cabinet with suitable airflow. Electrical loading on the 24 V supply remains low, and the electronics dissipate a maximum of 11 W under full computational load. Expansion for nonvolatile media or optional fieldbus modules is available through a single Type I+II CompactFlash slot. Internal peripheral communication uses a 16-bit ISA (PC/104) system bus that maintains compatibility with many Beckhoff add-on cards. Control execution is handled by the TwinCAT NCI Runtime package, which supplies NC interpolation and PLC logic in one software environment.
