The CX1020-N041 is a plug-in module for the Beckhoff CX Embedded PC Systems series. Developed by Beckhoff, it adds isolated serial connectivity to a CX1020 controller, enabling communication with field devices in distributed automation applications. The module attaches directly to the system bus and occupies minimal DIN-rail space, allowing serial networks to be integrated without a separate gateway. Its compact format supports installations where control cabinet space is limited and additional communication interfaces must remain close to the embedded controller.

The module's housing measures 19 mm in width, 51 mm in depth, and 100 mm in height, so it aligns with the standard CX1020 profile and fits within common cabinet clearances. With an enclosure rating of IP20, it is intended for mounting inside a closed control panel that prevents direct finger contact with energized parts. Electrical power is supplied through the system bus, removing the need for an additional supply connector and keeping power wiring concentrated on the base CPU. Two 9-pin D-Sub plugs on the front panel provide the serial connections. Their male configuration supports the use of commonly available molded or ribbon cables, while the front-facing arrangement keeps both connections accessible after the module is installed on the DIN rail.

Each physical port implements RS422/RS485 signaling, supporting either multidrop two-wire communication or point-to-point four-wire cabling across extended distances in electrically noisy industrial settings. The transceivers support a maximum data rate of 115 kbaud, which is suitable for cyclic status polling and parameter transfers involving drives, barcode readers, or remote I/O devices. The operating system assigns the ports as COM3 (X410) and COM4 (X411), allowing application software to access each channel directly during operation. The device tolerates up to 95% relative humidity without condensation, supporting stable operation in enclosed switchgear rooms where humidity is controlled but may vary with plant conditions.
