CX1020-N030 by Beckhoff

The CX1020-N030 is a serial interface option manufactured by Beckhoff for the CX Embedded PC Systems series. It mounts beside a CX1020 CPU and extends the embedded PC with additional communication lines for diagnostic consoles, barcode readers, or legacy drives within industrial automation cells. As an add-on terminal for the modular CX platform, it shares the same mounting, bus, and power framework, allowing asynchronous links to be added without changing the core controller footprint.

It provides two RS-232 ports that handle full-duplex asynchronous data exchange, with stop-bit and parity options selectable through the TwinCAT settings. Each channel supports a maximum throughput of 115 kbaud, which accommodates most operator panels and instruments found on factory floors. Electrical connections are made through a front-facing 9-pin D-sub plug, allowing the use of standard mating serial cables without adapters. The internal electronics receive power through the system bus, eliminating separate supply wiring and coordinating startup with the main CX CPU. For cabinet installation, the housing has an IP20 protection rating, which prevents finger contact with hazardous components and blocks solid objects larger than 12.5 mm. An external enclosure is still required to protect the module against water and smaller airborne particles.

The module has a height of 100 mm, matching the profile of adjacent CX components, while its depth of 51 mm keeps the connectors within the DIN rail assembly. Its narrow width of 19 mm preserves cabinet space when multiple serial or fieldbus extensions are installed. The enclosure weighs 80 g, so it adds little mass to the rail and limits stress on the latching tabs during vibration. Its compact housing also helps maintain cable bend space and airflow clearances around the embedded PC.
