CX 1500-B520-1001 by Beckhoff

The CX 1500-B520-1001 communication module belongs to the CX Embedded PC Systems series produced by Beckhoff. It adds a dedicated fieldbus interface to a CX controller so the host PC can exchange process data with external I/O devices on a decentralized network. Within an automation line, the module allows the embedded PC to appear as an intelligent remote node, simplifying the integration of sensors, drives, and actuators without additional standalone gateways.

The module is equipped with a DeviceNet controller so the host CPU can use the CAN-based protocol widely adopted in machine control. Connection to the rest of the CX system occurs through the PC104 stack connector, which supplies power and a 16-bit data bus for high-speed register access. Network behavior is fixed to a slave role, meaning the module answers master requests and does not initiate traffic; this simplifies configuration in PLC environments. Up to two communication modules can be added to one CX station, allowing different fieldbuses to be combined while respecting backplane limits. Installation in a control cabinet is handled with a top-hat rail clip, providing quick snap-on mounting and easy lateral coupling to adjacent CX units.

The slim housing supports dense panel layouts. A front width of 38 mm keeps the footprint narrow, while a housing height of 100 mm aligns with standard CX head units for uniform cable routing. The depth of 91 mm provides adequate space for the fieldbus transceiver while allowing the module to fit inside shallow cabinets. These proportions and the low mass of the electronics minimize stress on the DIN rail during vibration. The enclosure protects the internal electronics while permitting convenient access to the network connection. Its narrow profile also leaves more horizontal rail space for adjacent CX components and other control equipment.
